Activism

I dream of walking through the major art galleries and museums of the world and seeing that half of the artworks exhibited are by women.

On Whose Shoulders I Stand

“The role of the community activist artist is to bring issues to the community and to advocate for change. Susie does this in this exhibition and in her last series ‘For the one whose voice was silenced’ where she re-imagined her family history from the atrocities of WWII that devastated those with Jewish heritage. Susie embraces an activist visual approach: her art is deliberately political. It has narrative content and it reaches a broad cross-section of people”.

Excerpt from the exhibition’s opening speech by Professor Anne Marsh - art historian, independent researcher and art critic.

Exploring your Inner Artist

Exploring Your Inner Artist is based on the premise that we each have within us a huge reservoir of innate, untapped creativity. Our problem is not one of ability, but of courage.

Created and taught by Susie, this art course is designed to help participants move beyond their inner critic and reconnect with their innate creativity.

Teaching art in India

On visiting the village of Anegundi for the first time as a tourist in 2015, Susie knew she would need to return one day to volunteer with The Kishkinda Trust, which employs arts and crafts to empower the community. That “one day” took place in January 2026.

Teaching English in India

As a qualified and experienced English teacher, Susie also offered English classes to the village children. On seeing their thirst for learning, Susie decided to continue these classes by employing a local woman to teach them.

@ The Great Australian Women Artists

Inspired by Katy Hessel’s @thegreatwomenartists, Susie created @thegreataustralianwomenartists as a space dedicated to celebrating Australian women artists.

The account aims to build a community around the work and achievements of current and past Australian women artists, spanning disciplines from fibre arts, sculpture and photography to painting and beyond.

It celebrates artists at every stage of their journey — from emerging voices to established figures, and everyone in between — bringing their stories, practices and contributions into greater visibility.
